Arxis Honored as a Best Place to Work!

Arxis Group was honored as the #12 best place to work in the San Fernando Valley area at a reception on August 11, 2010. Sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, the program was designed to highlight companies who foster outstanding working environments. Rankings were based on an employer and employee surveys.

The picture below was taken at the event. Notice how the camera angle made yours truly look so small next to the presenting sponsor!

Of the award, David Cieslak, Arxis Principal, said "Being included on the list of 'Best Places to Work' is truly an honor. Arxis is a great place to work because of each team member's enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to outstanding customer service." As an afterthought, he added, "Maybe Mark should try doing a few pushups once in a while. It's rather apparent that typing and clicking aren't getting it done for him. I'm just sayin'." Long pause. "Oh wait ... is my microphone still on??"

Happy Employees Make Good Consultants!

We're blessed! Arxis was recently honored as one of the "Best Places to Work in the San Fernando Valley" by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal.

From the official press release, the "list of companies was chosen based on the feedback of two extensive questionnaires – one for the employer, which covered aspects such as company background, values, compensation, and community service; and another sent to each employee to gather feedback on company direction, leadership, and corporate culture.

"Bob Gaby, Arxis Principal, said, 'Receiving this award is a tremendous honor. Arxis is truly a great place to work because of each team member’s commitment to hard work, integrity, collaboration, customer service, and fun!'"

Read the entire press release here.

Mark Severance, Director of Sales & Marketing, was asked for his thoughts on the award, but had to rush off to his daily appointment with the company masseuse. This was especially important as immediately afterwards, he had a tee time with the Arxis golf coach. Following an afternoon on the links, he enjoyed a delectable dinner prepared by the corporate sushi chef. (Pictured at right.) Mark's only comments during the day were, "Ouch, that hurts!", "FORE!", and "Oishii!"

(Yes ... the previous paragraph was a joke.)

We're #3!!

Arxis Technology, Inc. was recently honored as one of the Top 25 IT Firms in the San Fernando Valley by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. Arxis was #3 on the list, which ranked IT consulting firms in the Greater San Fernando Valley by 2009 revenue totals.

We're very proud to be number three and thought you may be interested in the following facts about this special number from Wikipedia:
  • Three is the first odd prime number,[1] and the second smallest prime. It is both the first Fermat prime (22n + 1) and the first Mersenne prime (2n − 1), as well as the first lucky prime. However, it's the second Sophie Germain prime, the second Mersenne prime exponent, the second factorial prime (2! + 1), the second Lucas prime, the second Stern prime.
  • Three is the first unique prime due to the properties of its reciprocal.
  • Three is the aliquot sum of 4.
  • Three is the third Heegner number.
  • Three is the second triangular number and it is the only prime triangular number. Three is the only prime which is one less than a perfect square. Any other number which is n2 − 1 for some integer n is not prime, since it is (n − 1)(n + 1). This is true for 3 as well, but in its case one of the factors is 1.
  • Three non-collinear points determine a plane and a circle.
  • Three is the fourth Fibonacci number and the third that is unique. In the Perrin sequence, however, 3 is both the zeroth and third Perrin numbers.
  • Three is the fourth open meandric number.
  • Vulgar fractions with 3 in the denominator have a single digit repeating sequences in their decimal expansions, (.000..., .333..., .666...)
(Don't worry, mom, we won't dare repeat the vulgar fractions...)

Extraordinary Customer Experiences

by Mark Severance

Last week, a group from Arxis attended the Sage Insights conference in Denver, CO. The conference was a great chance to re-connect with friends from Sage, other resellers, and third party ISVs. And the weather was absolutely beautiful!

One of the recurring themes of the event was creating "Extraordinary Customer Experiences." Concepts such as asking good questions, listening, going the extra mile, caring, doing the little things, meeting needs, providing expertise, etc. were discussed as an essential component of the service that Sage and Arxis Technology provide to our clients.

Creating a succint definition of "extraordinary customer experience" (ECE) is difficult, but it's one of "know it when you experience it" type of things.  I've been fortunate to be on the receiving end of two such experiences recently.

ECE #1 - Anaheim Hilton

My family and I took a trip to Disneyland for my son's 5th birthday. To maximize our day, we decided to spend the night at a local hotel the night before. Through Priceline, we got a great rate on a room at the Anaheim Hilton. Arriving just after dinnertime, we were helped through the registration proces by Ana, one of the front desk attendants. As she worked, she noticed the kids and asked if we would like a room with a Disney-view. This normally costs more, but she'd wave the fee for us. We said, "Yes, please!" Then she asked the kids if they would like some cookies and milk delivered to our room. (If only all decisions were this easy.) Again, "Yes, please!!"

About twenty minutes later, after we were settled in our room, the room service guy rolls the cart into our room with a dozen, large assorted (and super delicious) cookies, an abundance of milk on ice, and a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries. Needless to say, we were blown away by the sight of the goodies and even more so after we enjoyed eating them.

I'm telling you - we could have skipped Disneyland and it would have been a successful vacation! The picture at right is Ana and three very grateful kids! Thanks, Ana, and the Anaheim Hilton for an extraordinary customer experience! :-)

ECE #2 - Denver Convention Center

While in Denver, I enjoyed an early morning run along Cherry Creek. At breakfast, I was quite thirsty, but could only get juice or coffee. I approached one of the staff at the front of the buffet line and asked for a bottle of water. She directed me to the supervisor (whose name I failed to get) for help. The supervisor very politely told me to ask one of the wait staff in the breakfast room and they would help me. This was fine. After filling my plate, I approached the entrance to the breakfast room. The supervisor met me there to tell me that I didn't have to ask anyone as she already she pointed me out to the wait staff, who would watch where I sat down and bring me a bottle of water. Sure enough, I sat down and the friendly waiter brought me my own bottle of Aquafina.

I would have been fine asking the wait staff for my own bottle. I would have been appreciative that they brought me an off-menu item! But the extra effort by the supervisor turned an ordinary customer service experience into something extraordinary.

I'm inspired by my friends in Anaheim and Denver. And I want to do all I can to help Arxis Technology deliver extraordinary customer experiences.

What about you? What are your ECE stories? I'd love to hear!

SCiftS Supplier's Night

Arxis had a wonderful time at the SCiftS (So. Cal. Institute of Food Technologist's Section) Supplier's Night on March 11 in Anaheim!

Highlights from the evening included:

1) Food! - What else? The assortment of cheese, chocolate, nuts, dried fruits and more was delectable!
2) People - the number of people who came by to say "hello," was phenomenal. They enjoyed our gummi hot dogs and hamburgers. At times, traffic was so heavy in the aisles that people could not get through. It's been a while since I've experienced that at a trade show!
3) Magnets - our nutritional label magnets were a hit! The headline "ERP Software with All the Right Ingredients" should be gracing file cabinets, refrigerators, children's travel games, and artificial joints all across the Southland!
4) Food & Beverage Software - we spoke with a number of people who are struggling with managing their operations with multiple applications and a host of Excel spreadsheets. They were quite interested to hear how it truly is possible to have an integrated software solution that includes accounting, inventory management, manufacturing, quality control, compliance reporting, food safety, and more! The capabilities of MAS 500 and O2 Process Manufacturing can provide significant benefits to growing food and beverage manufacturers and distributors.
5) Partnership - it was a pleasure to have Matt Ingebrigtsen, our partner advocate at Sage, join us for part of the evening. It's another indication of Sage's commitment to their partners and the food and beverage vertical.

Let us know if we can help you better manage your operations! And if you would like one of our sweet magnets to affix to your magnetic object of choice, don't hesitate to drop me a line at mseverance@arxistechnology.com!

The Importance of Good Partners

I had a chance to answer a few questions from our friends at SWK in a recent version of their newsletter, SWK Insider. SWK is a long-time partner of ours that provides EDI, custom programming, and other support for us and our clients. The interview covered the importance of partnerships, our "Nine Steps to Success" process, reasons for the success we've experienced, and our outlook for 2010.

We really appreciate the folks at SWK. They've built their business on maximizing the success of their business partners and end customers. In that way, SWK and Arxis are exactly alike. As to their baseball loyalties, (most of them are Yankee fans), we agree to respectfully disagree.

Read the entire interview here.

What are your thoughts on the qualities of a good business partner or successful business partnership? Please share!

Solid State Drives

Every so often, a technology comes along that has the potential to truly transform the way we operate. Solid state drives (SSD) are a perfect example!

For years, solid state memory has been making its way to smaller and smaller devices and form factors. Whether its memory cards for cameras or USB thumb drives for your PC, these devices provide an incredible amount of storage in pint-sized formats.

Well, we’re finally to the point where this miniaturization process will help us start replacing the physical hard disk drives (HDD) inside of our desktop and laptop computers. These drives are called Solid State Drives and are now available in capacities up to 512 GB!

What makes these drives so appealing and potentially revolutionary? Well, consider the following:

Solid State Drives…

  • Are 5x faster than HDDs (operate at an equivalent of 40,000 RPM vs. 7200 RPM for today’s fast HDDs)
  • Consume 50% less power
  • Are 6x more reliable (MTBF) than HDDsPlug into existing HDD slots on desktops and laptops
  • Are available in 16GB – 512GB capacities
  • Are tuned to run the new Microsoft Windows 7 OS faster

Simplify!

Uh, oh, here I go
Wading through a lot of stuff you know
Juggling it all while I'm balancing on a wire
Slow down, I have found
Seems that every time I turn around
Got one foot in the muck and another foot in the mire
Well, I'm scaling down, pulling back
Got to try
To simplify

“Simplify” Wes King

At Arxis, we love the idea of simplifying things. We want to help our clients streamline processes and procedures, eliminate inefficiencies, and reduce complexity. There are a myriad of ways to do this, but to keep this manageable, we’ll keep it to three for now:

#1 - Stop Cutting and Pasting!

If your business relies heavily on spreadsheets, it probably means you are spending hours creating reports that could be built in minutes.

Indicee is a web-based Business Intelligence (BI) tool that enables you to:

                                       • eliminate cutting and pasting of data
                                       • stop recreating the same reports every month
                                       • combine data from multiple applications
                                       • automate reporting on the web
                                       • optimize reporting without a major IT investment

To learn more about Indicee, view a short video, or sign up for a free trial, check out http://arxis.indiceeapps.com/

#2 – Utilize an “Invisible Assistant”

Wouldn’t it be great to have a your very own personal assistant who didn’t cost a lot, never complained, and made you look like a genius? An assistant who watches over your business, and warns you (and your staff) about conditions that require your attention. Conditions such as leads that haven’t been followed up on, stock items that require re-order, and invoices that are overdue for payment.

An assistant who takes care of repetitive business processes. Processes such as delivering client invoices and statements, assigning leads to salespeople, and distributing analytical reports to your staff.

KnowledgeSync is that type of an assistant! It can:

             • Trigger personalized alerts about any business conditions via e-mail, fax, pager,
cell phone, screen pop, and Web browser

             • Automate the delivery of forms, documents, and reports to clients and staff
             • Execute workflow to deliver invoices and purchase orders, and schedule
                intelligent follow-ups
